British model, columnist and charity ambassador David Gandy has been at the forefront of the male modelling industry since the age of 21.
In 2001, David was entered into a modelling competition by friends on ITV’s This Morning. He won the competition and with it, a prestigious contract with Select Model Management. His modelling career was launched and in 2006 he became the muse of Dolce and Gabbana, starring annually in their apparel campaigns and best known as the face of their “Light Blue” fragrance. This iconic campaign saw David become recognisable overnight, with a 50ft billboard in Times Square, and over 11 million internet hits. In 2011, the Italian fashion house published a coffee table book solely on Gandy celebrating his work and relationship with the brand. David is still a quintessential Dolce & Gabbana model, and featured in the 2014 Light Blue advertisement alongside Bianca Balti.
David has appeared in numerous campaigns and catwalk shows, opening for D&G in Milan in 2010, with Naomi Campbell for Fashion For Relief and has worked alongside supermodels including Gisele, Eva Herzigova and actress, Scarlett Johansson. David has shot with some of the most sought after international photographers including Mario Testino and Steven Meisel, and holds an extensive portfolio of editorial work including the cover of VMan, L’Optimum and GQ. In 2010 he made male modelling history becoming the first and only male model nominated for the BFC’s Model of the Year award and in 2011 David won Shortlist’s “Face of Today” award.
Gandy was the only male model to represent his country and walk alongside supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell as part of the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony. In the same year he featured on 16 magazine covers and 18 fashion editorials. He was also listed as one of London’s Most Influential People by the Evening Standard and launched a follow up to his successful Men’s Style Guide app named ‘David Gandy Fitness and Training’.
Passionate about cars, David’s infatuation with all things automotive is at the heart of his GQ column ‘David Gandy Drives’ which he has written since 2011, and led to him being invited to participate in the 2013 Italian open-road endurance race, Mille Miglia, with fellow model Yasmin le Bon. In the same year, he appeared alongside Jodie Kidd and Quentin Wilson on Channel 5’s The Classic Car Show comparing a £1million classic Mercedes against its modern counterpart at London Fashion Week.
In 2013, Gandy was invited to become an official ambassador for London Collections: Men alongside Tinie Tempah and Dermot O’Leary. In the same year, he was appointed fashion ambassador for Comic Relief in 2013 after which he launched the Blue Steel Appeal, a series of events and initiatives helping to fundraise through fashion. David also appeared in the 2013 Marks & Spencer Christmas advertisement alongside the likes of Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Helena Bonham Carter
In 2014 David was chosen to star alongside Jennifer Lopez in the video for her new track “First Love”. David also diversified into film, making his debut appearance alongside Helena Christensen in Away We Stay for W Hotels. Later that year, Marks & Spencer launched the David Gandy for Autograph collection, a 28 piece underwear and sleepwear range designed by Gandy, following his appearance in their advertisement the previous year.
In June 2015 David launched his second collection with Marks & Spencer, an 8 piece swimwear line. With a pair of trunks being sold every minute, it became the brand’s fastest-ever selling menswear line. In the same year, David continued to broaden his entrepreneurial portfolio acquiring cult small shoe label, David Preston, acting as chairman and ambassador for the brand. David also competed once again in the Mille Miglia alongside Jodie Kidd, and joined the iRace Pro Team of Vector Martini Racing in 2015. Under the instruction of Vector professionals, David will train as a powerboat racing pilot and alongside racing, will undertake a World Endurance Record as part of the Vector four-man crew.
M&S increased their collaboration with Gandy in 2016 by expanding the ‘Gandy for Autograph’ range. In January, they announced the addition of sports-inspired loungewear with additional swimwear revealed in March and the launch of beachwear announced in May. In June 2016, David became the brand ambassador for Wellman vitamins and supplements produced by Vitabiotics. Towards the end of the year, Dolce & Gabbana released their first Light Blue winter campaign which featured Gandy on the ski slopes shot by Mario Testino.
David continues to write his blog for Vogue.com, lives in Fulham and is an avid supporter and first ambassador for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
